“There are parts to perform, hearts to warm, king and queens to take by storm, as we go along our way…”

“Life is like a Broadway Musical — Embracing the Community of Our Existence”

My personal philosophy is Life is like a Broadway musical, an intricate and vibrant stage where each of us plays our part.

When I was just a wide-eyed 16-year-old camper at Camp Ramah in New England, I was handed the director’s hat and the opportunity to helm my very first musical. Having previously performed in over a dozen shows, I thought I knew what it took to put on a spectacular performance. Little did I realize that beneath the spotlight, there was a bustling world of dedication, teamwork, and unwavering commitment. I quickly learned that life, much like theater, is a communal endeavor. In Hebrew, we call it “Kehilla” – the heart of a thriving community.

The Power of Teamwork

What most people don’t realize about pulling off a spectacular play is the amount of teamwork that goes into it. When every member of the production team believes that their contribution is indispensable, that’s when the magic happens. It’s not just the actors on the stage; it’s the entire ensemble behind the scenes that breathes life into the production.

Every Contribution Matters

The stage performance that captivates the audience is merely the tip of the iceberg. The real miracle happens beneath the surface – that 90% hidden beneath the waves. Audiences may never see the countless hours spent memorizing lines, perfecting character portrayals, and rehearsing music and choreography. The meticulous work on costumes and the enchanting compositions that send shivers down the spine remain obscured. The lighting and sound teams, along with the stage manager, work tirelessly behind the scenes. And let’s not forget the moments of tears and laughter during rehearsals, the blunders, and the spontaneous improvisations that create unforgettable memories.

Celebrating Individuality within the Community

When a group of people dedicates themselves wholeheartedly to a shared vision, something incredible happens. Every individual is celebrated, seen, heard, and known for their unique contribution to that moment in time. This sense of belonging and significance is a powerful aspect of community life.

Life Lessons from Theater

My journey as an event designer has been shaped by my 30 years of experience as a director, teaching artist, family educator, teacher, guidance counselor, doula, and mom. The impact of theater on the healthy development of young people is profound. But it’s not just about vocal exercises, acting techniques, and character development. Theater teaches us the essence of community participation, of giving our all for the collective good.

A Rich Tapestry of Humanity

The theater allows us to explore the richness of humanity, expand our capacity for empathy, dream together, and work tirelessly toward a common goal. It encourages us to tell stories that delve into important questions about who we are and why we exist. These are the enduring legacies that theater imparts upon us, the memories that reside in our hearts forever.

In the grand theater of life, we find that our experiences, much like a Broadway show, are enriched by the collective contributions of our diverse community. The lessons from the world of theater extend beyond the stage, offering profound insights into the significance of togetherness, empathy, and the pursuit of a greater purpose. Life is a masterpiece in the making, and we are all essential cast members in the grand production. Embrace the power of community, and you’ll discover that every individual’s unique contribution matters, leaving an indelible mark on the tapestry of humanity.

And… Scene.
