Uplifting Pride

June is pride month. It’s a time when we all come together to celebrate each and every person in the LGBTQIA+ community. Anyone, regardless of if they identify with the community, can be an ally and show support.

At Up In The Chair, we believe that everyone deserves to feel seen, included, and uplifted for being their true, authentic selves.

With that in mind, it is necessary to create a space where people can feel comfortable sharing their stories in the workplace, at school, online, and in their daily lives.

Here are ways we like to uplift and understand the LGBTQIA+ community:

Listen and Communicate

Before we take action, it is so important to listen. Listening to others can give us new perspectives and allow us to understand what someone is going through. Allow them to speak without interrupting and avoid making assumptions. Mindful communication can go a long way, so saying, “I’m here for you,” or “Thank you for sharing that with me,” can really make a difference and create a comfortable space.

Keep Learning and Ask Questions

While hearing about someone’s experiences can give us new knowledge, it is also important to stay informed. If there is something you are unfamiliar with, do some research and ask questions! There is something new to learn every day, and the more we do that the more inclusive we can be. Actively talking to your family, friends, and peers about the LGBTQIA+ community and about different ways we can make spaces more inclusive is just one step in making a difference.

Speak up

A part of being an ally means that we must speak up anytime we see someone being discriminated against based on their gender, sexuality, race, etc. It takes action in order to make a change in the world. Using your voice to stand up against hate and prejudice can give recognition to those who have been marginalized.

Show Support

There are multiple ways to show support to the LGBTQIA+ community. Addressing people by their preferred name and pronouns is a simple but impactful way to make someone feel included and supported. Another way is to see what local events you can attend about diversity and inclusion, or even look to see if there is a pride parade or festival near you! All of the steps listed above are only a few out of many different ways to celebrate pride month.

Even though June is pride month, we can continue to uplift and show support to the LGBTQIA+ community no matter what time or day it is. At Up In The Chair, we recognize you and stand with you. We are listening to and celebrating you.

We invite you to share a moment where you uplifted someone in the LGBTQIA+ community or about other ways to show support.
